good camping food

I’m not a terribly experienced camper but I’m off this weekend (I hope) for some camping in Maine.  What’s your favorite camping food? So far I have a short list–your contributions will help!

breakfast:

oatmeal (very easy to pack)

pancakes (if they just require water)

lunch:

tasty bites (easy especially cold)

apples

bananas (can get crushed though)

trail mix

dinner:

kielbasa (ok, that’s just a nod to Doug Scadding)

tastey bites

mac and cheese (great idea Chris!)

Help me out!  Give me some good suggestions!

damn consumerism

Now that I’m back in the employed set of people, I find myself making lists of things I want to purchase. For instance:

  • chacos sandal
  • new roeckl biking gloves
  • 5qt pot for brewing beer
  • dress socks for work
  • new earbuds
  • furniture for apartment
  • new tennis rackets
  • new running/cross training sneakers
  • tent for camping
  • sleeping map for camping
  • water filter for camping (yeah, lots of camping gear
  • Amplivate album by Kidbeyond
  • all of Nizlopi’s music
  • bla bla

Looking at this list has annoyed me to no end. I’m making lists of things to purchase. What about things I want to do? I’d rather have that list than those things above. Feels like consumerism is driving me which causes me in my annoyance to freeze like a deer in the headlights.

my cell phone and my laptop

More convergence thoughts.

When I’m at work hacking away on my computer or hanging in a cafe working on my laptop my cell phone is set to silent. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to be disturbed (well, maybe no the case at work), but I don’t want my phone to make noise.

So here’s what I want. I want my phone to talk to my computer via bluetooth and tell it that I have a phone call and who is calling. Similar to a new email a small icon will slide in off the edge of my screen and tell me “you have a phone call” or “you have a text message”. Basically any event of importance on my phone.

Just like multiple email accounts, I want to receive all incoming information at one place. I don’t want to actively check multiple sources on my own.

what have we come to?

What have we come to when the legal disclaimer is longer than the code example? This is taken from:

Ask Yourself

I don’t like those “power of positive” declarations, because life isn’t that simple. However, when I’m considering doing something and I start to talk myself out of something I simple ask myself, “are you underestimating yourself?” That usually leads me to do whatever I’m considering doing.

Still might not get me to buy that girl at the bar a drink but it does get me to try out for improv groups, initiate scenes or, even better, bike into Central Square when rain is forecasted.

one last wedding picture

Happy Happy Joy Joy!

the toast

Before I forget it here’s the toast I did for my brother during the reception:

Kathy, we’ve often joked that your last name “Hoben” is a German verb.

Ich hobe

du hobst

er, sie, est  hoben

wir hoben

ihr hobt

sie hoben

Let’s use it in a sentence, “Ich habe am Sonntag gehoben”. Which means on Sunday I curled up like a cat, with a cat, and slept on the couch. Or, “Unterwegs habe ich gehoben” means roughly means while driving from here to there I got lost. But today I want to add another meaning, to love someone I love. A plurality of love. Or, to love someone who is loved by someone else. So Kathy thank you.

Eric, Ich hobe dich.

Wedding Speech

Here’s the speech I gave during my brother’s wedding that took place yesterday. Well done Kathy and Eric!

I feel nothing new.
I feel nothing because to me this already happened.
The happiness I’ve felt for you two has become
a steady tone in my life that is so constant I hardly notice it
(except when she calls you bunny).
You two are still the people I know from Brooks School.
The two people I know from Lincoln Sudbury High School.
Love hasn’t dramatically changed you,
for change to happen there has to be work,
I don’t see any work.
Love has merely made you better.
Love has made you a better listener.
A better giver.
A better brother.
A better sister.
Love has made you a force.
A presense moving through this community.
And that presense, I don’t feel.
For to me, this has already happened.
I feel nothing new.

Awesome

My Harold Level 2 Improv class, Mike had a great line. I can’t remember who was in the scene with him but it was great:

Person X: “Teach me! How do I become cool?”
Mike: “You take your awesome and you put it out there.”

wow! So everyone, take your awesome and just put it out there for the world to see!
